We drive through the largest untouched desert landscape in Iceland, across black sand plains and through white pumice wilderness, unreal, strange and fascinating at the same time.

We turn off the main road at the Hrossaborg crater ruins and head south through the wasteland of Mývatnsöræfi to the oasis of Herðubreiðarlindir. We continue to Dyngjufjöll and the Drekagil gorge. In the early afternoon we reach Vikraborg in Askja. From there, we walk half an hour to Lake Öskjuvatn and the crater Víti (approx. 2.4 km) right next to it. We spend enough time in Askja to experience this unique natural wonder. The way back leads via Herðubreiðarlindir to Mývatn.

Please bring your own food for the day and enough drinking water. Make sure you wear warm, wind- and rainproof clothing and good footwear.
